It is important to have a style guide of your logo. It will clearly show you how to use your logo so it looks exactly the same every time it is reproduced. This allows you to keep your corporate image consistent.

Make sure that you get a letter from the design studio declaring that you own the copyright to your logo.

There is only one way to prevent this from happening and that is to create a style guide. Not only will a style guide assist you control the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you sustain your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Step 1 : Mark the audience for your Style Guide. Is this for staff to work in-house or is this for suppliers and contractors to refer to?

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question heard when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many company brands and different types available, it can be challenging for the buyer to make a decision between both technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors offer far better image quality and colour accuracy. The following article will explain why DLP projectors struggle with projecting an equal level of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your home on your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel works like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector turns on to when the image reaches your screen is absolutely significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to form the projector image. Something important to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your projected surface simultaneously. The way a DLP projector operates is very different and even the way an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of creating an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then combine each coloured element of the image into a single whole image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create high brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have put a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this then degrades colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and as such must be better quality. For those who are unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications when compared to the majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this must be a plus, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is being utilised. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to see includes moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because all colours are projected with the others. DLP developers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up error, but the price tag of these projectors make them hardly practical for the large part of businesses and consumers.

Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and recall how the various colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in a different way. Often with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will be projected above and a spill of blue will show below an image of something as simple as a straight black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on isolated LCD panels.

The one true plus (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its smaller total size and weight. However, this is only relevant for transport and must be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is important to you, then the choice is easy. Take an LCD projector! LCD projectors will consistently make bright, colourful images with fewer image imperfections. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht became a leisure craft used initially by royalty and then by the burghers on the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, borne from private games. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), built additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 punt. Yachting rose as classy with the rich and aristocracy, but after that time the habit did not last.

The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, with large naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when conglomerating with other societies, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some ordered fashion on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to the throne in 1820, it was known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing setting of British yacht racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the rise of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for great bets were held, and the social life was splendid. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English had power. Sailing was largely for fun and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and created a benchmark of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the second half of the 19th century. The style of sizeable yachts was originally heavily impacted by the success of America, which was designed by George Steers for a syndicate led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its victory at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in a contemporary sense, with just a model for an outline. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the use of the study of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what it had earlier done for hulls.

Because almost all sailboats had to be individually built, there was a requirement for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were designed. Thus, a rating rule was created, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. In modern times, one of the most rapidly blossoming areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to standard requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be done on an even playing field with no handicapping necessary. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class adopted for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting belonged largely for the nobility and the rich, expense was no problem, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller boats occurred in the later half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the hardiness of smaller yachts. Following this in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational yachts became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, during which steam started to take the place of sail power in commercial vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in leisure boats. Large power yachts were furthered to a high element, and long-distance travel turned into a favoured pastime of the rich. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave rise to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of large steam yachts. Conspicuous within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service for World War II.

As larger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were developed, many bigger yachts were using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, progressed during World War I. From the decade after that, big power-yacht creation flourished, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that time the largest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of large power boats lessened in 1932, and the fashion thereafter was for smaller, less pricey boats. After World War II, a lot of small naval boats were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting has become a widespread loved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and keeping their own small leisure boats. The amount of craft and owners has increased steadily, not only in the traditional locations on the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be categorized by the impact they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that impinges the same relative onus on all the taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income increase in the same levels. A progressive tax is characterized by a greater than proportional growth in the tax onus relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the comparable burden. Ergo, progressive taxes are thought of as reducing inequity in income distribution, but regressive taxes can result in increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are often believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are initially progressive, however, may become less so for the upper-income class—in particular if a taxpayer is permitted to lessen his tax base by declaring deductions or by leaving out some income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income groups would also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are claimed.

Income measured over a given period does not necessarily offer the best measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory growth in income might be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer might elect to provide for consumption by decreasing savings. Thus, if taxation is compared with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than when held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of luxuries) are usually regressive, because the share of individual income consumed or spent for a specific good lowers as the rate of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), levied as a fixed amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is not simple to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden depends for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In analysing the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to distinguish between differing points of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those nominated in legislation; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income increases by one dollar. Thus, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income rises. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates should regard provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lowers by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than specified within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to realise the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may depend on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates indicate the portion of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates usually grow with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households might dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that lessen as income rises.
