Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The common question heard when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and different types available, it can be challenging for clients to pick between these technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors provide far better image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph tells you why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up a comparable level of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your home covering your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel functions like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector switches on to when the image reaches your screen is vitally important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. Something to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your screen simultaneously. The way a DLP projector works is very different and even the produced image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of forming an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then draw each coloured element of the image into the single total image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the highest brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have put a white segment in the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this goes and lessens colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of producing. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications when compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At one glance, this seems to be a plus, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is being utilised. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to bring to life needs moving images, DLP projection technology also has image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this downside because all the colours are projected simultaneously. DLP manufacturers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up error, but the price of these projectors make them not practical for most businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how different colours of light refract differing amounts when directed through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in different ways. Usually with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will show above and some extra blue will show below an image of something as simple as a lone black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be adapted to reduce these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on its own LCD panels.

The sole actual buy point (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant for transporting the device and needs to be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht became a leisure craft used initially by royalty and secondly by the burghers for the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, coming out of private challenges. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), made more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 punt. Yachting was found to be fashionable for the rich and nobility, but after that point the fashion did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and held great naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club went on, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when joining with other clubs, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some organized manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it was named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual location of British yachting. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. Every member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for large bets were held, and the club life was lovely. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English held dominance. Sailing was for the most part for pleasure and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and set a standard of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht group, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the latter half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was initially greatly impacted by the victory of America, which was created by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its victory at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and manufactured in the modern sense, with just a model used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the application of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what it had done earlier for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats were individually manufactured, there came a requirement for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were made. Thus, a rating rule was decreed, which is found in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and revised in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly blossoming areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to standard requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing such boats can be held on an even keel with no handicapping required. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class adopted for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was an activity primarily for the nobility and the wealthy, cost was no problem, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller boats came in the second half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the value of less sizeable boats. Thereafter in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure boats became more common, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, when steam started to take the place of sail power in public craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in leisure vessels. Large power yachts were developed to a high degree, and long-distance sailing turned into a fond pastime of the affluent. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave rise to those powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht archetype for many years. By the later half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were only power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. In particular among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service in World War II.

As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many bigger boats started using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, was furthered in World War I. In the decade after, bigger power-yacht creation flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of big power boats declined from 1932, and the style from then was toward smaller, less expensive craft. After World War II, a lot of small naval boats were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting has become a widespread loved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally manning and keeping their own small leisure yachts. The amount of yachts and owners has increased steadily, not only in the traditional places along the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are differentiated by the impact they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that applies the same relative liability on each taxpayer—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income grow in equal levels. A progressive tax is recognisable by a higher than proportional increase in the tax burden in regard to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional growth in the relative burden. Therefore, progressive taxes are regarded as fighting inequity in income distribution, while regressive taxes are seen to have the result of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, might become less so in the upper-income demographic—especially if a taxpayer is permitted to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by taking some certain income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income groups can also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are made.

Income measured over the period of a given year may not definitely offer the most suitable measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory rises in income could be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer may decide to provide for consumption by taking from savings. Ergo, if taxation is compared with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than when compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except those on luxuries) tend to be regressive, because the dissemination of individual income consumed or spent on a specific good declines as the amount of personal income grows. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is not simple to dictate corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of uncertainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden lays crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In assessing the economic purpose of taxation, it is relevant to differentiate between several points of tax rates. The statutory rates are dictated in the legislation; often these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income increases by one dollar. Ergo, if tax liability rises by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income rises. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates are required to regard provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than specified in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to understand the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, as it may depend on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally increase with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households may dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that lower as income rises.
