Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most common question heard when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and models available, it can be overwhelming for consumers to make a choice between those technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors give far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The article below tells you why DLP projectors struggle with creating a similar standard of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your room for your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel operates like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point when the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is extremely significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your screen all at the same time. The way a DLP projector operates is vastly different and even the produced image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to projecting an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then put together each coloured element of the image into the complete image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer top brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have added a white segment into the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this also detracts from colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications when compared to many LCD projectors. At one glance, this seems to be an advantage, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is being utilised. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you plan to project includes moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this problem because the colours are sent at the same time. DLP manufacturers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up error, but the price tag of these projectors make them not practical for the majority of businesses and consumers.

Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and recall how various colours of light refract varied amounts when passing through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light differently. Often with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will come through above and a spill of blue will come up below an image of something as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be set to minimize these effects on the projected image, as each colour is projected on isolated LCD panels.

The one veritable advantage (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to mobility and needs to be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is vital to you, then the decision is easy. Go with an LCD projector! LCD projectors will always make bright, colourful images with fewer image errors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht was a pleasure craft used mostly by royalty and secondly by the burghers on the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, arising as private games. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), made more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 punt. Yachting rose as classy with the wealthy and royalty, but after that point the trend did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, with much naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club went on, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other groups, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some ordered method on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to the throne in 1820, it was known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing location of British yacht racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the accession of George IV. Each member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for high stakes were held, and the club life was wonderful. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English had power. Sailing was for the most part for fun and found its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the latter half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was initially heavily put upon by the win of America, which was designed by George Steers for a association started by John C. Hence, a rating rule was decreed, which is found in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly blossoming areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be had on an even keel with no handicapping required. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class adopted for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting belonged mostly for the nobility and the rich, expense was no problem, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller boats happened in the latter half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the value of smaller craft. Thereafter in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and leisure craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, when steam began to take the place of sail power in public boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in pleasure boats. Large power yachts were furthered to a high degree, and long-distance travel turned into a fond occupation of the rich. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to those powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht standard for many years. By the later half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the manufacture of large steam yachts. In particular of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service during World War II.

As bigger and better quality internal-combustion engines were produced, many big boats began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, progressed for World War I. In the decade after, big power-yacht creation grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that point the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of larger power yachts declined from 1932, and the trend from then was toward smaller, less costly yachts. After World War II, many small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally beloved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally manning and keeping their own small leisure boats. The popularity of craft and yachtsmen increased steadily, not only in the traditional places along the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be categorized by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that puts the same relative onus on every taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in the same scale. A progressive tax is characterized by a more than proportional increase in the tax burden relative to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the relative liability. So, progressive taxes are regarded as removing the lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes may result in an increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are often regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, can become less so for the upper-income categories—particularly if a taxpayer is able to reduce his tax base by declaring deductions or by taking particular income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income classes would also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are made.

Income measured over the period of a given year might not necessarily offer the most appropriate measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory increases in income may be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer may opt to finance consumption by reducing savings. Ergo, if taxation is held in comparison along with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the share of individual income consumed or spent on a specific good lessens as the rate of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also called head taxes), calculated as a fixed amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is difficult to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of the uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden lays crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In considering the economic purpose of taxation, it is important to distinguish between varied ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates include those nominated in the law; often these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income taken by taxation when income increases by one dollar. Hence, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income grows. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates should consider provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than indicated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to realise the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, as it may be reliant on considerations such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the portion of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households could dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decline as income increases.
