There is only one way to avoid this from happening and that is to use a style guide. Not only will a style guide assist you oversee the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you reinforce your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most common question asked when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many company brands and types available, it can be overwhelming for the buyer to choose between these technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors offer better image quality and colour accuracy. The following article will explain why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing a similar rate of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your home on your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point when the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is extremely significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. Something important to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projected surface all at the same time. The way a DLP projector works is very different and even the produced image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of making an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then put together each coloured element of the image into a full image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer high brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some designers have included a white segment into the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this then degrades colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of producing. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications in comparison to a majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this seems to be a benefit, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is used. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to bring to life requires moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all colours are delivered at once. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up problem, but the price tag of these projectors make them almost impossible for the large part of businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how the various colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light at different levels. Generally with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will appear above and some blue will come up below something as simple as a single black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to minimize these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on its own LCD panels.

The sole actual buy point (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to transport and cannot be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. If the result of the picture quality is vital to you, then the choice is easy. Take an LCD projector! LCD projectors will definitely make bright, colourful images with fewer image errors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht had been a pleasure craft used first by royalty and secondly by the burghers on the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, coming out of private matches. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and had large naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other clubs, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some organized fashion on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to sovereignty in 1820, it was then named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing setting of British yachting. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. Each member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great stakes were held, and the social life was lovely. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English had control. Sailing was mostly for pleasure and found its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the later half of the 19th century. The design of sizeable yachts was originally largely put upon by the victory of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a group started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its success at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and crafted in the modern sense, with merely a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what it had done earlier for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats were individually manufactured, there came a need for handicapping boats previous to the one-design class boats were made. Therefore, a rating rule was decreed, which is found in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and amended in 1919. In the present day, one of the fastest growing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to single requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be had on an even basis with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting was an activity primarily for the aristocracy and the wealthy, cost was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The rise and popularity of smaller boats occurred in the second half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the value of less sizeable yachts. Following this in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure boats became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, during which steam began to emulate sail power in market vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly used in pleasure yachts. Large power yachts were furthered to a high degree, and long-distance travel turned into a favourite activity of the well off. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave way to yachts powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were exclusively power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the construction of large steam yachts. In particular within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service in World War II.

As bigger and better quality internal-combustion engines were created, many bigger boats started using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, advanced in World War I. During the decade following, bigger power-yacht building blossomed, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that period the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of larger power boats fell away from 1932, and the trend after that was toward smaller, less costly craft. After World War II, lots of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting has become a widespread loved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually owning and keeping their own small recreational yachts. The popularity of yachts and yachtsmen has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas by the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are distinguished by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that imposes the same relative requirement on all the taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income increase in relative proportion. A progressive tax is characterized by a more than proportional increase in the tax liability in relation to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional rise in the comparable burden. Thus, progressive taxes are regarded as removing a lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes may increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are often thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, can become less so in the upper-income categories—in particular if a taxpayer is able to reduce his tax base by nominating deductions or by taking some particular income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income demographics would also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are declared.

Income measured over the course of a given year might not necessarily come up with the best measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory increases in income can be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer may opt to finance consumption by reducing savings. So, if taxation is regarded alongside “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are usually regressive, because the dissemination of personal income consumed or spent for specific goods lowers as the rate of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), nominated as a standard amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is not simple to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden rests fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In analysing the economic purpose of taxation, it is essential to distinguish between differing ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates include those nominated in legislation; often these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. So, if tax onus grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates are required to review provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than indicated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for assessing incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, as it may be dependant on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the portion of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households can dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that lower as income grows.
