Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The common question asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different models available, it can be overwhelming for consumers to choose between both technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors offer far better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with creating a comparable standard of image quality.

Imagine a set of blinds in your home over your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel works like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point at which the projector turns on to when the image reaches your screen is vitally significant to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to create the projector image. A point to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your wall simultaneously. The way a DLP projector runs is vastly different and even the way an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to forming an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then combine each coloured element of the image into a full image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the highest brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have placed a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this goes and damages colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of producing. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications in comparison to the majority of LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be a benefit, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is in use. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you plan to see requires moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because every colour is projected at once. DLP designers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up artifacts, but the price tag of these projectors make them not practical for the large part of businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and remember how various colours of light refract various amounts when shone through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light differently. Generally with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will come up above and a superfluous blue will appear below an image containing something as simple as a single black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to reduce these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on a separate LCD panels.

The one actual plus (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to transport and must be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht was a leisure craft used mostly by royalty and later by the burghers on the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, arising as private games. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 punt. Yachting was found to be popular with the rich and aristocracy, but after that point the trend did not last.

The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and had large naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other societies, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some organized manner on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it was then named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing site of British racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. All members were required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great bets were held, and the society life was wonderful. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English took power. Sailing was largely for fun and reached its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and created a benchmark of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts took the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the later half of the 19th century. The design of large yachts was originally largely affected by the win of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a club started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in today’s sense, with just a model being used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the science of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what such study had already done for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats had to be individually built, there arose a desire for handicapping boats previous to the one-design class boats were made. Therefore, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and edited in 1919. In modern times, one of the rapidly flourishing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to single requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for these boats can be had on an even playing field with no handicapping at all. A perfect example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting belonged primarily for the royal and the wealthy, expense was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller yachts happened in the second half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the seaworthiness of smaller yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure boats became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, during which steam began to replace sail power in public boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were used increasingly in personal vessels. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high degree, and long-distance travel turned into a fond pastime of the affluent. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then made way to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht archetype for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were exclusively power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of bigger steam yachts. Notably within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service for World War II.

As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were developed, many big yachts were using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, advanced in World War I. From the decade after that, bigger power-yacht creation blossomed, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that time the biggest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of larger power craft fell away from 1932, and the style from then was in preference of smaller, less expensive boats. From World War II, lots of small naval boats were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a internationally beloved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and maintaining their own small leisure yachts. Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are categorized by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is one that imposes the same relative liability on each taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in equal levels. A progressive tax is recognisable by a larger than proportional increase in the tax burden relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional rise in the related burden. Hence, progressive taxes are regarded as reducing inequalities in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes might have the result of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, could become less so for the upper-income class—especially if a taxpayer is allowed to lower his tax base by claiming deductions or by taking some income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income groups will also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are claimed.

Income measured over a given period might not absolutely give the most suitable measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory growth in income could be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer could elect to finance consumption by reducing savings. Therefore, if taxation is compared along with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save those on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the spread of own income consumed or spent for specific goods decreases as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is not easy to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of uncertainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden depends essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In considering the economic purposes of taxation, it is relevant to distinguish between varied ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates include those dictated in the law; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Thus, if tax burden grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates should review provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than nominated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, since it may rely on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the fraction of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households might dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that fall as income grows.
