Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question heard when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different models available, it can be overwhelming for the buyer to make a decision between the two technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors have better image quality and colour accuracy. The following article will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up a comparable standard of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your household over your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel works like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector switches on to when the picture reaches your screen is ultimately significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something important to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your wall at once. The way a DLP projector functions is very different and even the final product of how an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to forming an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then put together each coloured element of the image into a whole image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the highest brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some designers have added a white segment into the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this also degrades colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be superior. For those who are uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is able to produce. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to many LCD projectors. At a glance, this can seem to be an advantage, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is being utilised. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you plan to bring to life needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because every colour is processed simultaneously. DLP developers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up problem, but the cost of these projectors make them impractical for the large part of businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and remember how the different colours of light refract differing amounts when passing through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light in a different way. Often with a DLP projector, an extra yellow colour will appear above and an extra blue will appear below an image containing something as simple as a straight black line. In building LCD projectors can be adjusted to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is projected on a separate LCD panels.

The sole real buy point (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant to transporting the device and must be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a pleasure craft used mostly by royalty and then by the burghers on the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, arising as private challenges. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), made additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 punt. Yachting became fashionable with the affluent and nobility, but after that point the habit did not last.

The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, with much naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when merging with other organisations, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some organized fashion on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to the throne in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued site of British racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the rise of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for high bids were held, and the social life was lovely. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English held power. Sailing was mostly for pleasure and rose to its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts followed the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the later half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was originally largely put upon by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its victory at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in today’s sense, with merely a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the use of the study of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what such study had previously done for hulls.

Because almost all sailboats were individually manufactured, there was a requirement for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were built. Thus, a rating rule was written, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly blossoming areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be had on an even playing field with no handicapping at all. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting was an activity primarily for the royal and the wealthy, money was no object, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller boats happened in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the hardiness of smaller craft. Following this in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became more common, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, in which steam began to replace sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in personal yachts. Sizeable power yachts were developed to a high degree, and long-distance cruising was a favoured activity of the rich. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave rise to those powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the design of large steam yachts. In particular of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service in World War II.

As more sizeable and more reliable internal-combustion engines were produced, many big boats started using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, was furthered from World War I. From the decade following that, big power-yacht creation grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that period the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of bigger power yachts declined from 1932, and the fashion thereafter was in preference of smaller, less expensive craft. Following World War II, a lot of small naval craft were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting is a widespread loved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually sailing and maintaining their own small recreational yachts. The amount of craft and sailors increased steadily, not only in the traditional places on the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be distinguished by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that places the same relative requirement on each taxpayer—i.e., when tax liability and income grow in equal levels. A progressive tax is recognisable by a greater than proportional increase in the tax onus in regard to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional growth in the related liability. Therefore, progressive taxes are seen as removing a lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are seen to have the effect of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, can become less so within the upper-income demographic—especially if a taxpayer is able to lessen his tax base by declaring deductions or by removing some income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income categories would also be more progressive if personal exemptions are made.

Income measured over a given year may not absolutely come up with the most appropriate measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory increases in income might be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer may choose to pay for consumption by decreasing savings. Ergo, if taxation is made comparable with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (excepting luxuries) are generally regressive, because the dissemination of own income consumed or spent on specific goods decreases as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), nominated as a standard amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is not easy to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to a lack of certainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden depends crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In assessing the economic purpose of taxation, it is essential to differentiate between various concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates are dictated in law; often these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income increases by one dollar. Therefore, if tax liability increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates should consider provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) declines by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than nominated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, because it may rely on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the fraction of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates commonly grow with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households can dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decrease as income increases.
