There is only one way to avoid this from happening and that is to set up a style guide. Not only will a style guide help you steer the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you strengthen your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Step 1 : Outline the audience for your Style Guide. Is this for staff to work in-house or is this for suppliers and contractors to refer to?

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question that is asked when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and different models available, it can be challenging for clients to decide between the two technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors offer superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph tells you why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up a comparable standard of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your house on your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel operates like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector is switched on to when the content reaches your screen is extremely significant in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. A point to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your wall all at once. The way a DLP projector works is vastly different and even how an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to projecting an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then combine each coloured element of the image into the whole image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the highest brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at any given time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have put a white segment into the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this goes and degrades colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and as such must be superior quality. For those who are uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to most LCD projectors. Initially, this appears to be an advantage, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is in use. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you plan to bring to life has moving images, DLP projection technology also has image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this problem because all colours are projected at the same time. DLP designers have formed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up problem, but the expense of these projectors make them hardly practical for the large part of businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and remember how different colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light differently. Usually with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will come through above and some extra blue will show below an image of something as simple as a single black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to reduce these effects on the projected image, as each colour is directed on a separate LCD panels.

The sole actual plus (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant to portability and needs to be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht was a leisure craft used mostly by royalty and then by the burghers in the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, arising as private games. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 bet. Yachting rose as classy for the wealthy and royalty, but after that point the fashion did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, with large naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other societies, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some stipulated manner on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to monarchy in 1820, it was then named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued location of British racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the accession of George IV. All members were required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for large bets were held, and the club life was wonderful. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English held dominance. Sailing was mostly for leisure and rose to its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the second half of the 19th century. The style of sizeable yachts was originally largely impacted by the victory of America, which was designed by George Steers for a association started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Hence, a rating rule came into being, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly blossoming areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to standard dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing such boats can be done on an even basis with no handicapping at all. A great example is the standard International America’s Cup Class taken on board for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was done mostly for the royal and the rich, money was no problem, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller yachts came in the latter half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the value of small craft. Thereafter in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and recreational boats became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, in which steam began to replace sail power in commercial boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in personal craft. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high standard, and long-distance cruising became a fond pastime of the affluent. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave rise to those powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. Like naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht archetype for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the design of bigger steam yachts. Conspicuous within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service during World War II.

As more sizeable and better quality internal-combustion engines were created, many bigger craft started using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, advanced from World War I. From the decade after that, bigger power-yacht creation grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that point the biggest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of larger power yachts fell away after 1932, and the trend from then was for smaller, less expensive boats. Following World War II, many small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting had become a globally loved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually owning and keeping their own small leisure yachts. The popularity of craft and owners has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas along the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be differentiated by the impact they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that puts the same relative burden on all taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income increase in relative proportion. A progressive tax is characterized by a greater than proportional increase in the tax liability relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional growth in the comparative onus. Hence, progressive taxes are regarded as taking away inequalities in income distribution, while regressive taxes are believed to have the result of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, could become less so within the upper-income categories—particularly if a taxpayer is allowed to lower his tax base by claiming deductions or by removing certain income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income classes would also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are declared.

Income measured over the course of a given year does not definitely provide the most accurate measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory growth in income can be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer may opt to pay for consumption by reducing savings. So, if taxation is compared with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except those on luxuries) are usually regressive, because the spread of personal income consumed or spent on specific goods decreases as the level of personal income increases. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a standard amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is not simple to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden rests essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In considering the economic effect of taxation, it is important to differentiate between various points of tax rates. The statutory rates will be specified in the legislation; usually these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income increases by one dollar. So, if tax liability increases by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislature often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates should take into account provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than specified within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to realise the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may rely on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the fraction of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates commonly increase with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households can dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decrease as income grows.
