Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most typical question asked when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and models available, it can be difficult for consumers to decide between the two technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors provide far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph explains why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up the same standard of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your house for your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel functions like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as professionals like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point when the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is vitally important with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. An important point to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your screen at once. The way a DLP projector runs is vastly different and even the way an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of projecting an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then combine each coloured element of the image into the single full image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the best brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have added a white segment into the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this goes and damages colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be better quality. For those unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications as compared to many LCD projectors. At a glance, this can seem to be an advantage, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is being used. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to view needs moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all colours are delivered with the others. DLP builders have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up error, but the expense of these projectors make them almost impossible for most businesses and consumers.

Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and they taught you how the different colours of light refract varied amounts when shone through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light at different levels. Usually with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will come up above and a spill of blue will show below an image as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to remove these effects on the projected image, as each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.

The sole veritable buy point (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant for mobility and must be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a leisure craft used initially by royalty and secondly by the burghers for the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, arising as private matches. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 punt. Yachting became fashionable among the affluent and aristocracy, but after that time the fashion did not last.

The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held large naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club endured, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other societies, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some organized manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to sovereignty in 1820, it came to be called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht club had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing location of British racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. All members were required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for large bets were held, and the social life was splendid. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English gained power. Sailing was mostly for fun and rose to its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts were within the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the later half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was first largely impacted by the success of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a club led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and built in the modern sense, with only a model used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the use of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what science had earlier done for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats had been individually built, there came a need for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were built. Thus, a rating rule was decreed, which ended up in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and edited in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly blossoming areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing these boats can be held on an even par with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on board for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting belonged primarily for the aristocracy and the rich, money was no issue, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The promotion and preference of smaller boats happened in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of less sizeable craft. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became more popular, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, when steam started to emulate sail power in market boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in personal boats. Bigger power yachts were developed to a high degree, and long-distance travel became a fond pastime of the rich. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave rise to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. Like naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the later half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the manufacture of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service for World War II.

As bigger and better quality internal-combustion engines were produced, many bigger boats started using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, advanced in World War I. From the decade after that, large power-yacht creation grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that period the best auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of larger power boats declined after 1932, and the fashion thereafter was for smaller, less costly yachts. After World War II, lots of small naval craft were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally beloved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually manning and keeping their own small leisure craft. The popularity of craft and owners is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional places by the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be distinguished by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that puts the same relative requirement on all the taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in equal scale. A progressive tax is recognisable by a greater than proportional growth in the tax liability relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the related liability. So, progressive taxes are thought of as reducing the lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes might have the result of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, may become less so within the upper-income class—in particular if a taxpayer is able to reduce his tax base by claiming deductions or by removing particular income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income demographics will also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are declared.

Income measured over the course of a given period may not absolutely offer the most suitable measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory growth in income could be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer might elect to pay for consumption by reducing savings. Ergo, if taxation is regarded along with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than if compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except luxuries) are usually regressive, because the portion of personal income consumed or spent for a specific good declines as the amount of personal income grows. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), nominated as a standard amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is hard to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to uncertainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden lays crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In analysing the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between several ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those specified in law; often these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Therefore, if tax liability grows by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislature often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income grows. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates should regard provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than specified in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may depend on such factors as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the part of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households can swamp these effects, allowing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that decline as income grows.
