Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question that is asked when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and different types available, it can be challenging for clients to decide between the two technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors give far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article explains why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing the same rate of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your house on your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel functions like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point at which the projector is turned on to when the image reaches your screen is ultimately significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. Something important to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your projector screen at the same time. The way a DLP projector functions is very different and even how an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of making an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then put together each coloured element of the image into the complete image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver high brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have placed a white segment in the colour wheel to improve all over brightness, but this goes and damages colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be better quality. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of producing. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications in comparison to most LCD projectors. Initially, this must be a plus, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is in use. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you plan to view needs moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all the colours are projected with the others. DLP builders have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up problem, but the price of these projectors make them not practical for most businesses and consumers.

Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember how different colours of light refract different amounts when projected through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light in different ways. Often with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will be projected above and a spill of blue will show below an image as simple as a single black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on its own LCD panels.

The sole veritable benefit (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its smaller total size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to mobility and needs to be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a leisure craft used mostly by royalty and secondly by the burghers on the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, coming out of private games. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), built additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 wager. Yachting rose as classy for the affluent and royalty, but after that point the fashion did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and had great naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other clubs, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated fashion on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to the throne in 1820, it was then named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing site of British yachting. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the rise of George IV. Every member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for high bids were held, and the club life was splendid. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English gained dominance. Sailing was for the most part for fun and reached its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a benchmark of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Hence, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and edited in 1919. In modern times, one of the rapidly flourishing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to standard specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing such boats can be held on an even keel with no handicapping at all. A perfect example is the standard International America’s Cup Class adopted for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting was an activity largely for the nobility and the affluent, cost was no object, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and popularity of smaller boats happened in the second half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the seaworthiness of smaller boats. Later in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational boats became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, when steam was set to replace sail power in commercial boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in personal vessels. Bigger power yachts were developed to a high standard, and long-distance travel turned into a favourite pastime of the wealthy. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then made way to yachts powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. Like naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service in World War II.

As more sizeable and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many large craft were using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, was furthered during World War I. In the decade following that, bigger power-yacht manufacture blossomed, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that time the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of larger power boats fell away after 1932, and the trend thereafter was toward smaller, less pricey boats. Following World War II, lots of small naval craft were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting has become a globally popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and maintaining their own small pleasure boats. The popularity of yachts and sailors increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas by the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be differentiated by the impact they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that imposes the same relative liability on all taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income move in relative proportion. A progressive tax is recognised by a greater than proportional increase in the tax burden in relation to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional increase in the relative liability. Hence, progressive taxes are regarded as reducing inequalities in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes might have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, can become less so within the upper-income categories—particularly if a taxpayer is permitted to lower his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding certain income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income groups would also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are made.

Income measured over the period of a given year might not definitely provide the most suitable measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory increases in income may be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer could elect to pay for consumption by decreasing savings. So, if taxation is regarded alongside “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except luxuries) are usually regressive, because the dissemination of own income consumed or spent on a specific good decreases as the level of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a fixed amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is not simple to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the uncertainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden is dependant fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In analysing the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to distinguish between varied concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates will be nominated in the law; usually these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income increases by one dollar. So, if tax onus increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates are required to review provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than indicated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may depend on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem determines that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates determine the part of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates commonly grow with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households can swamp these effects, allowing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decline as income increases.
