There is only one way to prevent this from happening and that is to create a style guide. Not only will a style guide help you conduct the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you reinforce your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Step 1 : Define the audience for your Style Guide. Is this for staff to utilize in-house or is this for suppliers and contractors to refer to?

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most typical question that is asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and different models available, it can be confusing for clients to make a choice between both technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors give superior image quality and colour accuracy. The article below explains why DLP projectors struggle with projecting a similar level of image quality.

Think of a set of blinds in your household on your bedroom window. By pulling a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel works like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is absolutely important in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to form the projector image. A significant point to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projected surface at once. The way a DLP projector runs is totally different and even the produced image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of creating an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a total image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form top brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have placed a white segment for the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this also detracts from colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be better. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of producing. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to the majority of LCD projectors. Initially, this seems to be a plus, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is being utilised. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to view needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all the colours are projected with the others. DLP builders have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up error, but the price tag of these projectors make them hardly practical for the majority of businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how the various colours of light refract differing amounts when passing through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in different ways. Usually with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will be projected above and some blue will show below something as simple as a single black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be fixed to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.

The only true plus (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its smaller total size and weight. However, this is only relevant to portability and has to be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is important to you, then the choice is simple. Go with an LCD projector! LCD projectors will constantly make bright, colourful images with fewer image imperfections. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a pleasure craft used initially by royalty and later by the burghers in the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, coming out of private challenges. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 wager. Yachting was found to be classy among the wealthy and aristocracy, but after that time the fashion did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, with large naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club went on, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other groups, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated manner on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to the throne in 1820, it was then called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued location of British yacht racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the accession of George IV. Every member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for large bids were held, and the club life was lovely. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English had control. Sailing was for the most part for pleasure and found its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts were within the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the later half of the 19th century. The design of large yachts was first largely impacted by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its victory at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and manufactured in a contemporary sense, with only a model used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the application of the research of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what such science had previously done for hulls.

Because almost all sailboats were individually built, there came a requirement for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were made. Hence, a rating rule was written, which is found in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and amended in 1919. Today, one of the fastest blossoming areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to standard requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between such boats can be held on an even basis with no handicapping at all. A prime example is the standard International America’s Cup Class taken on for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting belonged primarily for the royal and the rich, expense was no object, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and preference of smaller yachts came in the latter half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the seaworthiness of smaller yachts. Following this in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, during which steam began to replace sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in pleasure vessels. Sizeable power yachts were furthered to a high element, and long-distance cruising became a favourite occupation of the wealthy. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave rise to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of large steam yachts. In particular among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service for World War II.

As more sizeable and better quality internal-combustion engines were produced, many big boats started using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed during World War I. From the decade after that, large power-yacht creation grew, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that period the biggest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of large power craft declined in 1932, and the trend thereafter was toward smaller, less expensive boats. After World War II, many small naval boats were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting is a globally beloved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and keeping their own small recreational craft. The amount of craft and yachtsmen has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas by the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be categorized by the impact they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that puts the same relative requirement on every taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in relative levels. A progressive tax is recognised by a larger than proportional growth in the tax burden relative to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional growth in the relative liability. Therefore, progressive taxes are seen as removing the lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are believed to result in an increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are often believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, can become less so within the upper-income group—particularly if a taxpayer is allowed to lower his tax base by nominating deductions or by taking some income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income categories can also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are claimed.

Income measured over the period of a given year may not necessarily come up with the best measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory growth in income can be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer might select to finance consumption by reducing savings. Thus, if taxation is compared alongside “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than when compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except luxuries) are generally regressive, because the portion of personal income consumed or spent on specific goods declines as the level of personal income grows. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), nominated as a fixed amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is hard to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to uncertainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden rests for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In assessing the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to distinguish between differing concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates are specified in the law; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Thus, if tax liability grows by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates should take into account provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than specified within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to realise the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, since it may be reliant on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates indicate the part of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates commonly increase with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households might dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that decrease as income grows.
