Take control of getting your site conceived by a developer and know the process it will save you money and gain you a site that actually works the intended purpose!

1. Understanding your business and how you are currently positioned in your market.
In order to author a site that truly meets your requirements; you first need to have a full knowledge of your business including your products, and/or services and more importantly their market position. You then have to consider how you want to explain your business and what it offers in 7 seconds or less. Sounds impossible? Well that is the average time that a user will consider the point “is this site I searched for?”.

2. Budget and estimation
Have a budget in mind and don’t be afraid to let the developers know what it is. In saying this: BE REALISTIC, $500 will never see a great web site created, nor will they be anything left in the bank to market it.

3. The creative process
Be loaded with example sites and more importantly the elements of the site you like so they can get an understanding of what you would like to see on your site and also what you find frustrating about other sites. It is important to have a style guide of your logo. It will clearly show you how to use your logo so it looks exactly the same every time it is reproduced. This allows you to keep your corporate image consistent.

Tip 9
Make sure that you get a letter from the design studio declaring that you own the copyright to your logo.

There is only one way to prevent this from happening and that is to set up a style guide. Not only will a style guide help you conduct the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you fortify your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most common question that is asked when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and models available, it can be confusing for the buyer to decide between the two technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors provide far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The article below will explain why DLP projectors struggle with projecting a similar level of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your house for your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. That is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel operates like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point at which the projector switches on to when the image reaches your screen is ultimately important to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to form the projector image. An important point to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your projected surface all at the same time. The way a DLP projector operates is widely different and even how an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of making an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then put together each coloured element of the image into the full image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver the highest brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have placed a white segment into the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this further detracts from colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be superior quality. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is able to produce. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications as compared to most LCD projectors. At a glance, this appears to be a plus, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is used. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to see has moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because every colour is sent simultaneously. DLP developers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up problem, but the price tag of these projectors make them almost impossible for the majority of businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and remember how the various colours of light refract various amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light at different levels. Often with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will be projected above and some extra blue will appear below an image as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be adjusted to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is directed on its own LCD panels.

The only true advantage (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant for transporting the device and has to be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is crucial to you, then the solution is easy. Go with an LCD projector! LCD projectors will always produce bright, colourful images with fewer image errors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht was a leisure craft used mostly by royalty and then by the burghers in the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, arising as private matches. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), made other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 wager. Yachting was found to be classy for the rich and nobility, but after that point the habit did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, with great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club went on, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after merging with other groups, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some stipulated manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to the throne in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual location of British yachting. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. Every member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great stakes were held, and the club life was lovely. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English gained power. Sailing was largely for fun and rose to its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and created a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the latter half of the 19th century. The design of large yachts was initially largely put upon by the victory of America, which was created by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its victory at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and manufactured in today’s sense, with only a model for an outline. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the use of the science of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what such study had already done for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had been individually manufactured, there came a desire for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Thus, a rating rule was decreed, which resulted in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and amended in 1919. In modern times, one of the fastest blossoming areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to standard specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between these boats can be had on an even par with no handicapping required. A great example is the generic International America’s Cup Class adopted for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting was done largely for the nobility and the rich, money was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The rise and preference of smaller boats came in the later half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the seaworthiness of less sizeable yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure craft became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, at which point steam began to emulate sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were used increasingly in leisure craft. Large power yachts were developed to a high standard, and long-distance sailing became a fond pastime of the rich. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then made way to those powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht archetype for many years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the design of large steam yachts. Notably of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service for World War II.

As more sizeable and more dependable internal-combustion engines were produced, many large craft were using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, was furthered from World War I. From the decade following that, large power-yacht manufacture grew, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that time the best auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of large power boats fell away from 1932, and the fashion after that was in preference of smaller, less pricey boats. From World War II, lots of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting is a widespread loved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually sailing and maintaining their own small recreational boats. The popularity of boats and yachtsmen has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas along the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are categorized by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that impinges the same relative requirement on all the taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income increase in the same scale. A progressive tax is characterizable by a higher than proportional rise in the tax liability relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional growth in the comparable burden. Ergo, progressive taxes are thought of as removing a lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes may have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, may become less so for the upper-income demographic—in particular if a taxpayer is allowed to reduce his tax base by claiming deductions or by excluding some certain income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income groups will also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are made.

Income measured over a given period might not definitely offer the most accurate measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory increases in income can be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might elect to provide for consumption by reducing savings. Therefore, if taxation is regarded alongside “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except those on luxuries) are usually regressive, because the spread of one’s income consumed or spent on specific goods declines as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), levied as a set amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is complicated to dictate corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of the uncertainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden lays essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In analysing the economic purposes of taxation, it is necessary to distinguish between various ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are those nominated in legislature; usually these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. So, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates must review provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) declines by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to understand the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, as it may depend on such factors as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates determine the fraction of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates commonly grow with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households can dampen these effects, allowing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that fall as income rises.
