There is only one way to prevent this from happening and that is to set up a style guide. Not only will a style guide help you conduct the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you strengthen your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Step 1 : Mark the audience for your Style Guide. Is this for staff to put to work in-house or is this for suppliers and contractors to refer to?

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most typical question heard when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and models available, it can be challenging for customers to make a choice between these technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors give superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph will explain why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up the same rate of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your house over your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel operates like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector is turned on to when the image reaches your screen is absolutely important in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. Something to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your projected surface all at the same time. The way a DLP projector functions is vastly different and even the way an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is directed through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of creating an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then put together each coloured element of the image into the complete image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver the top level of brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at any given time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have put a white segment in the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this goes and damages colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and as such must be superior. For those who are uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of producing. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications in comparison to most LCD projectors. At first glance, this can seem to be a plus, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is being used. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to view requires moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this problem because all the colours are projected at the same time. DLP manufacturers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up error, but the price of these projectors make them almost impossible for many businesses and consumers.

Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and they taught you how the different colours of light refract varied amounts when projected through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light at different levels. Often with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will come up above and a superfluous blue will show below something as simple as a single black line. While being built LCD projectors can be adjusted to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.

The one real buy point (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant to transport and must be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht had been a leisure craft used mostly by royalty and then by the burghers on the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, arising as private challenges. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 wager. Yachting became popular with the affluent and nobility, but after that period the trend did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and held great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club went on, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other clubs, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated fashion on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to monarchy in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing location of British racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. Every member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large bids were held, and the society life was superlative. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English gained dominance. Sailing was largely for leisure and reached its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht group, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the second half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was initially heavily put upon by the win of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its success at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and manufactured in the modern sense, with merely a model for an outline. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the science of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what it had done earlier for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had to be individually built, there came a requirement for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Hence, a rating rule was decreed, which is found in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and revised in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly growing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to single specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between these boats can be had on an even par with no handicapping at all. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was done primarily for the nobility and the rich, cost was no problem, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The rise and desire of smaller yachts happened in the second half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the value of smaller craft. Following this in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and recreational yachts became more popular, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, when steam was set to take the place of sail power in commercial craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in leisure yachts. Large power yachts were furthered to a high degree, and long-distance sailing became a fond pastime of the well off. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to those powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht archetype for many years. By the second half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service during World War II.

As more sizeable and more dependable internal-combustion engines were developed, many large craft started using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, was furthered during World War I. From the decade after that, large power-yacht manufacture flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that period the largest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of bigger power craft lessened after 1932, and the style from then was in preference of smaller, less expensive craft. Following World War II, a lot of small naval craft were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting is a globally beloved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and keeping their own small recreational craft. The amount of craft and yachtsmen increased steadily, not only in the traditional places on the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are distinguished by the impact they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that places the same relative burden on all the taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income grow in equal scale. A progressive tax is recognised by a higher than proportional growth in the tax liability in relation to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the relative onus. Therefore, progressive taxes are seen as taking away inequalities in income distribution, but regressive taxes are believed to increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, can become less so for the upper-income demographic—especially if a taxpayer is allowed to lower his tax base by nominating deductions or by taking some certain income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income classes can also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are claimed.

Income measured over the period of a given year might not necessarily offer the most accurate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory growth in income might be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer might elect to provide for consumption by reducing savings. So, if taxation is held in comparison with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than when compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the dissemination of individual income consumed or spent on a specific good lowers as the level of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a fixed amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is not simple to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to the uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden depends fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In considering the economic effects of taxation, it is important to distinguish between several concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those dictated in legislature; commonly these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Ergo, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislature commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income grows. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates must take into account provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lowers by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to know the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, since it may be dependant on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the percentage of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally increase with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households might dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that decline as income rises.
