Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most typical question asked when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different models available, it can be challenging for the buyer to make a decision between those technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors give better image quality and colour accuracy. The following article tells you why DLP projectors struggle with projecting an equal grade of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your household covering your bedroom window. By pulling a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as professionals like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point when the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is ultimately significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to send the projector image. Something important to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your screen all at once. The way a DLP projector runs is totally different and even the way an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of forming an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then draw each coloured element of the image into a full image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer high brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have included a white segment in the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this then lessens colour accuracy.

I hear in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be better. For those who are unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications in comparison to the majority of LCD projectors. At one glance, this must be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is being utilised. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to bring to life includes moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this downside because all the colours are processed at once. DLP developers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up problem, but the price of these projectors make them almost impossible for many businesses and consumers.

Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and recall how the various colours of light refract various amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in different ways. Most of the time with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will appear above and some blue will come up below something as simple as a lone black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be adapted to remove these effects on the projected image, as each colour is processed on isolated LCD panels.

The sole actual advantage (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to transport and needs to be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht was a leisure craft used first by royalty and secondly by the burghers for the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private challenges. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 bet. Yachting was found to be classy among the affluent and aristocracy, but after that period the trend did not last.

The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held large naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when merging with other societies, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some stipulated manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to monarchy in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual setting of British racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. Each member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large stakes were held, and the society life was superlative. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English held dominance. Sailing was largely for pleasure and reached its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and created a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht group, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts took the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the later half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was originally largely put upon by the victory of America, which was designed by George Steers for a group headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and crafted in the modern sense, with merely a model for an outline. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the application of the study of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what such science had earlier done for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had to be individually built, there was a need for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Thus, a rating rule was created, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and amended in 1919. In the present day, one of the fastest growing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be had on an even keel with no handicapping necessary. A great example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on board for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting was done primarily for the royal and the rich, cost was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller craft happened in the latter half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of small boats. Later in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure craft became more common, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, at which point steam was set to emulate sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were used increasingly in pleasure boats. Large power yachts were progressed to a high degree, and long-distance cruising was a favourite pastime of the affluent. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave way to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. Like naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were only power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the design of bigger steam yachts. Notably within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service for World War II.

As larger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were developed, many big boats began using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed for World War I. In the decade after, bigger power-yacht manufacture grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that point the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of big power craft fell away in 1932, and the trend thereafter was in preference of smaller, less pricey craft. From World War II, many small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally popular sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally manning and maintaining their own small pleasure craft. The popularity of craft and owners has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are differentiated by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is one that places the same relative requirement on each taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income move in equal proportion. A progressive tax is recognised by a higher than proportional increase in the tax liability in regard to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional rise in the related burden. Therefore, progressive taxes are thought of as reducing a lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes are believed to have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are generally thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, might become less so in the upper-income categories—particularly if a taxpayer is able to lessen his tax base by declaring deductions or by removing certain income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income demographics will also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are made.

Income measured over a given period does not absolutely offer the most suitable measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory increases in income may be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer could decide to provide for consumption by decreasing savings. Ergo, if taxation is made comparable alongside “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save luxuries) are generally regressive, because the spread of individual income consumed or spent on specific goods lowers as the amount of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), levied as a set amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is hard to dictate corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the lack of certainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden lays fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In analysing the economic purpose of taxation, it is essential to distinguish between various points of tax rates. The statutory rates will be nominated in legislation; generally these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Thus, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income grows. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates need to review provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to understand the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, as it may depend on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates determine the fraction of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually grow with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households can swamp these effects, forcing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that fall as income rises.
