The common question that is asked when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and types available, it can be confusing for the buyer to make a decision between the two technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors offer superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with creating an equal grade of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your household over your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel works like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point at which the projector switches on to when the content reaches your screen is ultimately important with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to send the projector image. Something to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projected surface simultaneously. The way a DLP projector runs is widely different and even how an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of forming an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then put together each coloured element of the image into the single total image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form high brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have added a white segment in the colour wheel to improve all over brightness, but this goes and damages colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior quality. For those who are uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications in comparison to many LCD projectors. At first glance, this can seem to be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is being used. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to view has moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because all colours are delivered at the same time. DLP designers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up error, but the cost of these projectors make them almost impossible for most businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how various colours of light refract various amounts when shone through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in a different way. Often with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will show above and an extra blue will be projected below an image containing something as simple as a single black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to minimize these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on its own LCD panels.

The only real buy point (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant to transporting the device and has to be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht became a pleasure craft used initially by royalty and later by the burghers on the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, arising as private matches. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), built other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 bet. Yachting became classy among the rich and aristocracy, but after that period the fashion did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and had great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when conglomerating with other clubs, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some organized fashion on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to sovereignty in 1820, it was then called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual site of British racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the accession of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great bets were held, and the society life was superlative. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English took power. Sailing was mostly for fun and reached its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and created a benchmark of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the second half of the 19th century. The craft of large yachts was originally heavily put upon by the win of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and crafted in a contemporary sense, with only a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the use of the study of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what such science had earlier done for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats were individually built, there arose a requirement for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were built. Hence, a rating rule was written, which resulted in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and edited in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly flourishing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to the same requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing such boats can be held on an even basis with no handicapping at all. A prime example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting belonged primarily for the aristocracy and the wealthy, expense was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and popularity of smaller craft happened in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the seaworthiness of small boats. Thereafter in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure craft became more common, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, during which steam was set to emulate sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in pleasure vessels. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high standard, and long-distance sailing was a fond activity of the rich. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then made way to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were exclusively power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of bigger steam yachts. Conspicuous within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service during World War II.

As bigger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were produced, many big craft began using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, was furthered for World War I. In the decade that followed, big power-yacht creation grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that point the biggest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of larger power craft lessened after 1932, and the fashion after that was toward smaller, less pricey yachts. After World War II, a lot of small naval boats were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a widespread beloved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and keeping their own small recreational yachts. Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are differentiated by the impact they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is one that places the same relative onus on all the taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income move in equal scale. A progressive tax is recognised by a more than proportional increase in the tax onus in relation to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional growth in the relative burden. Hence, progressive taxes are regarded as removing the lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes might have the result of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are generally believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, may become less so for the upper-income categories—especially if a taxpayer is permitted to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by leaving out some particular income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income groups would also be more progressive if personal exemptions are declared.

Income measured over the course of a given period might not necessarily give the most accurate measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory growth in income may be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to pay for consumption by taking from savings. Therefore, if taxation is compared along with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the portion of one’s income consumed or spent for a specific good lowers as the amount of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), nominated as a fixed amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is not simple to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of the lack of certainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden rests fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In assessing the economic purpose of taxation, it is necessary to distinguish between varied ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are nominated in legislature; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. So, if tax liability grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income grows. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates should review provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than indicated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may rely on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the percentage of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates commonly rise with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households could dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that lessen as income increases.

The LCDs put for projection systems are usually small reflective or transmissive panels lit up by a forceful arc lamp source. A line of lenses expands the reflected or transmitted image and then displays it onto a screen. With front-projection systems the LCD is placed on the same area of the screen as the viewer, however in rear-projection systems the screen is set off from behind. Projectors of more expense and capacity sometimes utilise three distinct LCD panels, creating separate red, green, and blue images that combine to create a coloured display on the screen.

The increasing need for pictographic presentations has put a growing emphasis on the switching speed of liquid crystals. The corresponding change in optical properties can make a change from light to dark in the case that one or more polarizers are utilised.

SSFLC devices have been publicized for large passive-matrix presentations, but their expensiveness and complexity has stopped them from making any particular progress on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, display some promise for use as elements in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their speedy response allows them to be used in time-sequential colour systems, in which dear colour filters are taken out for a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in quick pace (approx 100 cycles per second). For example, the liquid crystal can be switched to a transmissive state in the red and green periods and to a nontransmissive state for the blue period, with the result that the eye sees an average of red and green light, or the colour yellow.

The History of the Chair

From each of the furniture items, the chair may be the paramount one. While most other objects (apart from the bed) are intended to support objects, the chair supports the human form. The term chair was regarded here in the wider sense, from stool to throne to complex chairs including the bench and sofa, which may be looked upon as extended or connected chairs, and whose character (i.e., whether they are intended for sitting or reclining) is not obviously defined.

The social history of the chair is as intriguing as its history as an art and craft. The chair is not merely a physical support and aesthetic piece of art; it is also semiotic of social ranking. Within the historical royal courts there were clear signifiers between having a chair with arms, or a chair with a back but without arms, or worse having to sit on a stool. In the 20th century, the director’s and manager’s chair has been an indicator of superior dignity, and even in democratic governments the speaker sits on a high-set floor.

In its furniture purpose, the chair can be employed for a range of different forms. There are chairs created to suit man’s age and physical abilities (the high chair, the wheelchair) and to indicate his rank in society (the executive chair, the throne). In historical days there were chairs used for birthing (birth chairs); during the 20th century, there have been chairs to die in (the electric chair). There are chairs with one, two, three, and/or four legs, chairs with or without arms, and chairs with or without backs. Our lifestyle has developed unique chairs for use in automobiles and aircraft. Every one of these chair types have been perfected to match to differing human desires. For its particular link with man, the chair comes to its full purpose only when in use. Whereas it is not relevant to one’s appreciation of a cupboard or a dresser drawers whether there might be anything inside or not, a chair is really understood and regarded best by a person using it, for chair and sitter complement one another. Thus the various limbs of the chair have been given labels according to the elements of our human body: arms, legs, feet, back, and seat.

Because the first function of your chair is to support a body, its worth is evaluated primarily on how suitably it measures up to this practical use. The history of the chair lasted over an era of several thousand years. Among such societies, special note must be made of ancient Egypt and Greece; China; Spain and The Netherlands in the 17th century; England in the 18th century; and France in the 18th century during the lives of Louis XV and Louis XVI.

Egypt
Two ancient Egyptian chair forms, both the construct of expert scheme, are today a finding from tomb findings. First of these two is a four-legged chair with a back, the other a folding stool. The classical Egyptian chair has four legs structured not unlike those of some animal, a curved seat, and leading to a sloping back supported with vertical stretchers. In this way a stable triangular construction was obtained. There appears to be no marked difference between the construction of Egyptian thrones and chairs for ordinary people. The main change lied in the intricacy of ornamentation, in the particulars of costly inlays. The Egyptian folding stool most likely was created to be an easily portable seat for army soldiers. As a camp stool that kind existed during much later points. But the stool also was created for the task of a ceremonial seat, its original task as a folding stool neglected or forgotten. This can today be noted, from as early as 1366–57 BC in two stools, created in ebony with ivory inlay decoration and gold mounts, from the tomb of Tutankhamen. They are made in the construction of folding stools but are not able to be folded as the seats are formed with wood. The simplistic manufacture of the folding stool, made of two frames that spin on metal bolts and bear a seat of leather or fabric fastened between them, was then seen but some time later during the Bronze Age folding chairs of Scandinavia and northern Germany. The better recognised of this form is the folding stool, made of ashwood, which can now be seen at Guldhøj (National Museum in Copenhagen).

Greece and Rome
The iconic Greek chair, the klismos, is known not as any ancient item still extant but as found in a variety of pictorial evidence. The significant kind is the klismos placed on the Hegeso Stele at the Dipylon burial place outside Athens (c. 410 BC). It is a chair with a backward-sloping, curved backboard and four curving legs, only two of which would be shown. These strange legs were possibly created in bent wood and were therefore put under great pressure from the weight of the sitter. The joints fastening the legs to the frame of the seat would have been therefore extremely stable and were visibly drawn.

The Romans adopted the Greek designs; designs of casts of seated Romans display examples of a denser and apparently kind of more crudely crafted klismos. Both styles, the light or the heavy, were revived during the Classicist epoch. The klismos design is used in French Empire chairs, in English Regency, and in some types of profound individuality around Denmark and Sweden around 1800.

China
The progression of the chair in China can not be charted as far back as chairs in Egypt and Greece. Since the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) an unscathed collection of drawings and paintings was preserved, detailing the inside and outside of Chinese houses and the designs of furniture. Preserved also since the 16th century are a number of chairs constructed of wood or lacquered wood, that show an amazing resemblance to styles of past chairs.

As was the case in Egypt, there were two iconic chair forms in China: a chair having four legs and a folding stool. This four-legged chair is constructed both with or without arms though always with a square seat and straight stiles (straight side supports) to firm the back. In one style, it must be said, the stiles had been slightly curved over the arms for the purpose of conform to the structure of the S-shaped back splat (the centre upright of the back). Together, all three parts were mortised in the yoke-like top rail. Despite that the idea of this back splat had a foundation for English chairs of the Queen Anne period, wooden members that would merely to a limited capability stabilise corner joints (and are loose as a result) are a feature solely to Chinese chairs. The four legs pass through the seat frame, which stops over the rounded staves. Each member is round in section or is given rounded edges—references perchance to the bamboo tradition. The seat is not comfortable and may have had a plaited bottom. These chairs required the sitter to remain stiff and upright; when too much pressure is placed on the back, the chair has a way of toppling. In patriarchal Chinese houses of this era armchairs most likely were kept for the senior persons in the family, for they were given great respect.

The Chinese folding stool is thought to have travelled to China from the West. It does not differ very much from the Egyptian and Scandinavian folding stools, but it possesses a change in that the top rail is prettily joined to the two legs of the stool by using a curved member, which is more often than not seen with metal mounts. From a Western viewpoint the overall effect of these furniture styles is stylized. The structure and decorative elements are combined in a style that is both naïve and refined. The patchwork appearance is a result of the way that the individual parts do not seem to have been fixed together by use of either glue or screws, but are mortised with one another and fixed in position in the manner of a Chinese puzzle.

Spain: 17th century
The Golden Age of Spain in the 17th century also had its mark on the chair. Artworks display a kind of chair with a relatively crude wooden frame; a back and seat, nailed on, with two layers of leather, with horsehair stuffing in between the layers, stitched to bring out a pattern of little pads. The front board and a similar board at the back could be folded after unscrewing some tiny iron hooks. Therefore the chair was a readily portable piece of furniture when traveling which, during the same period, gave the status of a four-legged, high-backed armchair.

The Netherlands: 17th century
A low, square, upholstered style of chair can be seen in engravings of the interiors of rich Dutch homes by Abraham Bosse, a French artist, and in paintings by the Dutch artists Johannes Vermeer and Gerard Terborch. Though this type of chair can also be made in countries in which Dutch styles of interior decoration and Dutch furniture won preference, it is not certain that the style actually started in The Netherlands. Typically, the legs of the chair were smooth, round in section, and of slender dimensions; they are occasionally baluster-shaped (vase-shaped) or twisted. It is clearly a bourgeois piece of furniture and was made in considerable numbers, as indicated from one of Abraham Bosse’s engravings, in which an entire row of those chairs lined up by a wall. The form asserts itself by virtue of its elegant proportions and expensive upholstery in gilt leather or fabric bordered with fringes.

France and England: 17th and 18th centuries
The French Rococo chair in its most mature style—that was, as brought out in Paris around 1750—disseminated over most of Europe and was imitated or copied during the mid-20th century. The chair owes such popularity to a combination of comfort and elegance. The seat conforms to the human body and allows a relaxed sitting position. The back is bow-shaped, the legs curved. Typically the seat and back are upholstered, and there are small upholstered pads over the armrests. Smooth transitions achieved between seat frame, legs, and back disguise all the joints, which are solidly constructed on craftsmanlike methods even with the absence of stretchers between the legs.

French Rococo chairs and imitations of them employ wood of fairly thick density; but every member is deeply molded, all superfluous wood has been sanded away, and more upmarket chairs would be further embellished with highly delicate and decorative carvings. The wood might be varnished, stained, painted, or gilded. Silk damask or tapestry is used for any upholstery on the seat, back, and armrests; crosshatched cane is occasionally used in place of upholstery.

English chairs from the 18th century were more open in style than the French. The French manner for stylistic uniformity, which came from the premier circles in Paris and Versailles over most of France and found favour in several parts of the Continent, had no parallel in England. Prior to 1740, the most commonly used wood was walnut; thereafter, and for the rest of the century, it was mahogany. Walnut, though beautiful in hue, was soft and therefore less suited to wood carving than to rounded, curving forms. Outer surfaces, such as the back and seat frame, were usually veneered. During the walnut period, highly overstuffed armchairs, covered with leather or embroidered material, were also developed. The best upholstery of this period is precisely and firmly modelled and accentuated by braiding or tacks. When imports of mahogany became common, no specifically new chair designs appeared, but the character of the woodwork changed. Mahogany, having a firmer, closer grain, could be cut thinner, which meant that individual parts of the chair could be more slender in shape. Mahogany also lent itself better to carving than walnut. Carving was concentrated more on the arms and back than on the legs, which as a rule were straight and smooth with chamfered (bevelled) edges and molding. There was a wealth of variety in chairback designs, featuring elegant, pierced, vase-shaped splats or two upright posts connected by horizontal slats (ladderback).

Alongside the French Rococo chair and the best English chairs in walnut and mahogany, the stick-back chair was relatively unaffected by the stylistic changes of the day. Originally a medieval form, known, for example, from paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and still found in mid-20th century in the churches and inns of southern Europe, the stick-back chair (in all of its variations) consists basically of a solid, saddle-shaped seat into which the legs, back staves, and possibly the armrests are directly mortised. This typically peasant form underwent a renewal and a process of refinement in England and America during the 18th century. Under the name Windsor chair (a term that seems to have been used for the first time in 1731) or Philadelphia chair, it became commonly known and was widely distributed throughout the world.

Late 18th to 20th century
During the Neoclassical period, no basic changes took place in chair forms, but legs became straight and dimensions lighter. Backs in the shape of classical vases replaced the fanciful outlines of the Rococo period. Around 1800, freely executed imitations of Greek and Roman chairs of the klismos type, with curved legs and backrest, appeared. French chairs of the Empire period, executed in dark mahogany and embellished with ornate bronze mounts, created a ponderous effect.

In cheaper versions of inferior workmanship, bourgeois chairs of the 19th century carried on the traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The only real innovations were the bentwood (wood that has been bent and shaped) chairs in beech that became popular all over the world and were still made in the 20th century. Around 1900 the continental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles (French and German styles characterized by organic foliate forms, sinuous lines, and non-geometric forms), and the Arts and Crafts movement in England (established by the English poet and decorator William Morris to reintroduce idealized standards of medieval craftsmanship), gave rise to original chair designs by Eugène Gaillard in France, Henry van de Velde in Belgium, Josef Hoffman in Austria, Antonio Gaudí in Spain, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland. These new furniture styles did not exercise wide, let alone decisive, influence. The Art Nouveau chairs designed by the French architect Hector Guimard, for example, are collector’s pieces, but his name is known to a broader public only because of his fanciful entrances to the Paris Métro.

Modern
After World War I, the Bauhaus school in Germany became a creative centre for revolutionary thinking, resulting, for example, in tubular steel chairs designed by the architects Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and others. During World War II, the aircraft industry accelerated the development of laminated wood and molded plastic furniture. The dominant chair forms of this period go back to designs by Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, and Charles and Ray Eames. Rapid technical developments, in conjunction with an ever-increasing interest in human-factors engineering, or ergonomics, hint that completely new chair forms will probably be evolved in the future.

Jet Power and the Birth of the Jet Aviation Age

The invention of jet propulsion was ideal for fighter aircraft. Although at first it reduced range and endurance and often increased the take-off run. The German Messerschmitt Me 262 and the British Gloster Meteor twin jets saw action in 1944, together with the tailless Me 163 rocket interceptor which sacrificed range and endurance for astounding climb and speed in defending local areas against heavy bombers.

Germany was far in front of other countries in another factor too: armament. A range of 30 mm (1 inch) cannon, radically new high-speed cannon with multiple-revolver chambers, very large recoilless guns, spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets fired in salvoes, and wire-guided air-to-air missiles were all under test before the Luftwaffe s defeat. They gradually inspired similar developments in other countries: one German gun, the Mauser MG 213, led to the American Pontiac M-39, the French DEFA, the Russian NR-30, the Swiss Oerlikon KCA, and the British Aden, all of which are still in use.

Many early jet fighters were fitted into more or less conventional airframes. The fighter often considered the ultimate achievement of the piston era, the long-range North American P-51 Mustang appeared both in a twinned double-fuselage form and, with few changes, as a US Navy jet.

But the US Air Force decided to wait a year until its makers could sweep back the wings and tail at 35 degrees, which German research had shown could lead to higher speed. The result was the F-86 Sabre, which in 1948 set a speed record at 1,080 km/h (671 mph) and outflew all other fighters. Later versions carried radar and rockets and reached 1,150 km/h (715 mph).

During the Korean War (1950-3) the F-86 met a previously unknown machine built in the Soviet Union, the somewhat lighter and simpler MiG-15, and although the MiG could climb higher and had heavy cannon, the Sabre’s skilled pilots and better equipment gave it the edge in combat.

North American’s next fighter was the F-100 Super Sabre, which exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. The MiG bureau built the twin jet MiG-19, which was even faster, and is still in wide use. The US Air Force ordered various all-weather interceptors with largely automatic radar and flight control systems so that, with guided missiles, they could intercept and destroy enemy aircraft without the pilot ever seeing them.

The British ordered a jet-fighter flying-boat, but discovered that this way of doing business without airfields resulted in an inferior fighter. The Americans suffered similar problems with a ‘hydroski’ fighter, which could dive faster than sound, but took off and landed on retractable water skis.

Two even stranger fighters were designed around powerful turboprop engines and, standing on their tails, screwed themselves vertically into the air (they were intended to operate from the confined decks of warships or merchant vessels). Britain built high-altitude supersonic fighters with ‘mixed power’ from a turbojet and a rocket. In 1957 the British Minister of Defence suggested there would soon be no more manned fighters at all, only missiles. The Americans stuck to fighters, but made them very large and armed them with missiles, but no gun.

Today the wheel has turned full circle. In the past 10 to 20 years there has been a powerful trend to get back to the ‘eyeball-to-eyeball’ type of confrontation of the man in the Sopwith Camel. The pre-eminent Western fighter, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, was rebuilt with an internal gun, a rapid-fire 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon with six barrels firing up to 6,000 rds/ min, and a slatted wing to pull tighter turns in combat.

New small fighters appeared, such as the General Dynamics F-16, which, although bigger and heavier than any single-engined fighters of World War II, are nevertheless small and light by comparison with such impressive machines as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and MiG-25 Foxbat, The RAF’s next interceptor, the ADV (Air-Defence Version) of the Panavia Tornado, is a careful midway compromise, smaller than the three monsters just listed, but with two engines, long range, powerful radar, and extremely effective Skyflash missiles.

Modern interceptors defend vast blocks of airspace up to 160 km (100 miles) in radius, with powerful radar able to look down at the surrounding land and water and spot low-flying intruders trying to slip through the defences unnoticed. Their task is eased by the presence of special surveillance, early-warning, and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft, with enormous radars and sophisticated command and control systems to manage all a nation’s defences in the most efficient way.
