Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question customers ask when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and models available, it can be overwhelming for customers to choose between both technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors provide superior image quality and colour accuracy. The article below will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing an equal grade of image quality.

Think of a set of blinds in your house over your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. That is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel functions like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as professionals like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is vitally significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to send the projector image. A significant point to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projector screen all at once. The way a DLP projector operates is widely different and even how an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to making an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then put together each coloured element of the image into the whole image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the best brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some designers have added a white segment into the colour wheel to improve all over brightness, but this further damages colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be better. For those who do not know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of producing. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to many LCD projectors. At one glance, this seems to be a plus, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is in use. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to see includes moving images, DLP projection technology also has image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this problem because all colours are projected simultaneously. DLP builders have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the expense of these projectors make them impractical for many businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how the various colours of light refract various amounts when passing through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light at different levels. Usually with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will appear above and a spill of blue will come through below something as simple as a single black line. While being built LCD projectors can be set to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is projected on isolated LCD panels.

The sole real benefit (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its smaller total size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to transporting the device and cannot be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is vital to you, then the choice is a no-brainer. Go with an LCD projector! LCD projectors will consistently produce bright, colourful images with fewer image mistakes. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht had been a pleasure craft used mostly by royalty and secondly by the burghers for the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private challenges. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 punt. Yachting became fashionable for the rich and aristocracy, but after that time the fashion did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and had large naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other clubs, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some stipulated manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it came to be known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing setting of British yachting. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the accession of George IV. Each member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great bids were held, and the society life was splendid. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English held control. Sailing was largely for pleasure and rose to its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and set a standard of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht group, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the later half of the 19th century. The design of sizeable yachts was first greatly put upon by the victory of America, which was designed by George Steers for a association led by John C. Thus, a rating rule was decreed, which is found in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and revised in 1919. In the present day, one of the rapidly flourishing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be held on an even keel with no handicapping necessary. A great example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was an activity largely for the aristocracy and the rich, cost was no problem, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The rise and preference of smaller boats came in the second half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the hardiness of smaller boats. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and leisure craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, at which point steam started to replace sail power in public craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly used in personal vessels. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high element, and long-distance cruising turned into a favoured occupation of the rich. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then made way to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the later half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were solely power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the construction of large steam yachts. Notably within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service in World War II.

As more sizeable and better quality internal-combustion engines were developed, many large yachts were using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, advanced during World War I. In the decade following that, bigger power-yacht building flourished, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that point the largest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of larger power craft declined in 1932, and the style thereafter was for smaller, less costly boats. From World War II, a lot of small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting had become a widespread loved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually manning and keeping their own small leisure yachts. The popularity of craft and yachtsmen has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are categorized by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that applies the same relative onus on every taxpayer—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income increase in the same levels. A progressive tax is characterized by a higher than proportional growth in the tax burden relative to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional growth in the comparable burden. Hence, progressive taxes are seen as fighting inequalities in income distribution, but regressive taxes are seen to cause an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, may become less so in the upper-income class—particularly if a taxpayer is allowed to reduce his tax base by claiming deductions or by removing certain income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income classes can also be more progressive if personal exemptions are claimed.

Income measured over the period of a given year may not definitely come up with the most accurate measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory growth in income can be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer could elect to pay for consumption by taking from savings. Therefore, if taxation is made comparable with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than when held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save on luxuries) tend to be regressive, because the dissemination of own income consumed or spent for specific goods declines as the rate of personal income grows. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), nominated as a set amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is complicated to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the uncertainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden lays fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In analysing the economic purpose of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between differing ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates include those specified in legislature; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Ergo, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates need to regard provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lowers by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for assessing incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to understand the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, as it may rely on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem determines that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates determine the percentage of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households might swamp these effects, producing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that decrease as income grows.
