Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question customers ask when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and different models available, it can be difficult for consumers to choose between those technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors have far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The following article tells you why DLP projectors struggle with projecting the same standard of image quality.

Imagine a set of blinds in your room on your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel works like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector turns on to when the content reaches your screen is absolutely important to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something important to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your projected surface all at once. The way a DLP projector works is widely different and even the way an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is directed through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of projecting an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then draw each coloured element of the image into the single whole image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer the highest brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have put a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this goes and damages colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be better quality. For those who are unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of producing. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications when compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At one glance, this seems to be a benefit, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is used. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to view includes moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because every colour is sent at once. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up error, but the price of these projectors make them not practical for most businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and recall how the different colours of light refract varied amounts when passing through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in different ways. Most of the time with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will come through above and an extra blue will appear below an image of something as simple as a single black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is projected on isolated LCD panels.

The only veritable advantage (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to portability and cannot be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht became a leisure craft used initially by royalty and later by the burghers on the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, coming out of private games. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), built additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 bet. Yachting was found to be fashionable with the affluent and aristocracy, but after that period the trend did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held great naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club endured, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when joining with other organisations, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated fashion on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it was named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing site of British yacht racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. Every member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for high bets were held, and the social life was splendid. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English had control. Sailing was mostly for leisure and reached its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts followed the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the later half of the 19th century. The style of sizeable yachts was originally heavily affected by the win of America, which was created by George Steers for a group headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and crafted in today’s sense, with only a model used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the use of the study of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what science had previously done for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had been individually custom-built, there arose a need for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were built. Thus, a rating rule was written, which is found in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and edited in 1919. In modern times, one of the fastest growing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to single requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing those boats can be had on an even keel with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was an activity mostly for the nobility and the wealthy, cost was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller boats came in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the hardiness of less sizeable boats. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and leisure boats became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, at which point steam began to replace sail power in public craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in pleasure yachts. Large power yachts were developed to a high standard, and long-distance sailing turned into a favoured activity of the wealthy. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave way to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were exclusively power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the manufacture of large steam yachts. Conspicuous within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service in World War II.

As larger and better quality internal-combustion engines were developed, many bigger craft began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, was furthered for World War I. In the decade following, bigger power-yacht building blossomed, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that period the biggest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of large power craft declined in 1932, and the fashion thereafter was in preference of smaller, less pricey craft. From World War II, lots of small naval boats were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting is a globally loved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and upkeeping their own small pleasure boats. The number of craft and yachtsmen increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas along the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are differentiated by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that applies the same relative liability on all the taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in the same scale. A progressive tax is recognisable by a more than proportional increase in the tax onus relative to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional growth in the related liability. Hence, progressive taxes are thought of as removing a lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes are found to increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are generally considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, can become less so for the upper-income categories—especially if a taxpayer is permitted to lower his tax base by claiming deductions or by taking some certain income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income groups can also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are made.

Income measured over the course of a given period may not necessarily give the most accurate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory increases in income may be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer might elect to pay for consumption by taking from savings. Ergo, if taxation is compared alongside “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save on luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the dissemination of one’s income consumed or spent for a specific good lessens as the amount of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), nominated as a flat amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is difficult to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden lays crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In regarding the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between differing points of tax rates. The statutory rates include those dictated in law; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Therefore, if tax onus grows by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislature commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income rises. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates must consider provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to understand the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may rely on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates commonly grow with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households can swamp these effects, allowing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that lower as income grows.
