There is only one way to stop this from happening and that is to set up a style guide. Not only will a style guide assist you oversee the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you fortify your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most common question heard when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and models available, it can be difficult for customers to choose between the two technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors give superior image quality and colour accuracy. The following article tells you why DLP projectors struggle with creating an equal standard of image quality.

Think of a set of blinds in your room for your bedroom window. By pulling a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel functions like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as pros like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector switches on to when the picture reaches your screen is extremely significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to form the projector image. A significant point to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projected surface all at once. The way a DLP projector runs is widely different and even the final product of how an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of projecting an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then put together each coloured element of the image into a single full image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the best brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some designers have placed a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this then lessens colour accuracy.

I hear in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be superior quality. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of producing. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications as compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this must be an advantage, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is being utilised. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you plan to bring to life needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this downside because all the colours are projected at once. DLP designers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up artifacts, but the expense of these projectors make them not practical for many businesses and consumers.

Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and recall how different colours of light refract different amounts when shone through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light at different levels. Most of the time with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will come through above and an extra blue will appear below an image of something as simple as a straight black line. In building LCD projectors can be fixed to minimize these effects on the projected image, because each colour is directed on its own LCD panels.

The only actual advantage (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant to mobility and has to be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is vital to you, then the solution is a no-brainer. Choose an LCD projector! LCD projectors will definitely make bright, colourful images with fewer image imperfections. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht became a pleasure craft used initially by royalty and secondly by the burghers for the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private challenges. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), built additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 wager. Yachting was found to be classy among the rich and royalty, but after that point the fashion did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and had much naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after merging with other groups, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated fashion on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it was then named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued setting of British yacht racing. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the rise of George IV. Each member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great bids were held, and the club life was lovely. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English took dominance. Sailing was mostly for fun and reached its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the latter half of the 19th century. The craft of bigger yachts was first greatly impacted by the win of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and crafted in today’s sense, with just a model used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the application of the research of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what such science had done earlier for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats had to be individually built, there came a requirement for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were designed. Thus, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. Today, one of the fastest growing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to the same dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be held on an even playing field with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting was an activity primarily for the aristocracy and the wealthy, cost was no problem, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller craft came in the later half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the value of smaller yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure boats became more common, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, at which point steam began to replace sail power in commercial boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were used increasingly in leisure vessels. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high degree, and long-distance sailing turned into a favourite activity of the affluent. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then made way to yachts powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. Like naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht archetype for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were solely power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. In particular of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service in World War II.

As larger and better quality internal-combustion engines were developed, many large craft began using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, was furthered during World War I. From the decade following that, large power-yacht creation grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that point the biggest auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of larger power craft declined in 1932, and the trend from then was for smaller, less pricey craft. From World War II, lots of small naval craft were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally beloved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually sailing and upkeeping their own small pleasure craft. The popularity of boats and owners increased steadily, not only in the traditional locations by the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be distinguished by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that places the same relative liability on all taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income increase in relative proportion. A progressive tax is recognised by a larger than proportional increase in the tax burden relative to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional rise in the comparable burden. Hence, progressive taxes are regarded as taking away a lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are seen to increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are normally considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, might become less so in the upper-income demographic—especially if a taxpayer is able to reduce his tax base by nominating deductions or by removing particular income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income demographics will also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are made.

Income measured over a given year may not absolutely come up with the best measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory increases in income could be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer could decide to provide for consumption by reducing savings. Thus, if taxation is held in comparison along with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the share of one’s income consumed or spent for a specific good lowers as the level of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), nominated as a standard amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is difficult to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden lays essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In assessing the economic effect of taxation, it is important to distinguish between differing ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates include those dictated in legislation; usually these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Thus, if tax burden grows by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates must take into account provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, because it may rely on considerations such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates show the fraction of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households might swamp these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that fall as income rises.
