A logo is a decisive step to forming a business. It is the face of your business. And like your face expresses the tone of your business, gestures the service and reveals the professionalism or lack there of.

People spend a lot of money on the creation of their logo and walk away with no artwork files. Tip 1
First things first – you need to decide if you would like your logo to have an accompanying icon. It is suggested that if your service or product name is not in your business name then perhaps an icon will help in conveying a clear message across to your target audience.

An icon can add an extra element to your branding in that you could use the icon on its own on collateral where perhaps you are sighting for a more illustrative finish without losing recognition.

Tip 2
Colour can be an extremely important decision as it not only could change the output costs but can also hinder your output use. Consider the end result and what you will be bringing your branding onto in the future. Make sure your designer is aware of this as they should design accordingly.

Make sure you get a back up disk of your logo as a master file and assure that it includes all the files required for the different printing formats.

Creative software updates frequently and some programmes become obsolete. Make certain you have a copy of your logo as a PDF – with the text converted to curves.

Using images in your logo is not very easy to accomplish. For example it is difficult to reverse into black and white. Images also have limitations when it comes to size – they can only be reproduced to a certain size before they start pixilation.

Make sure that you get a letter from the design studio declaring that you own the copyright to your logo.

How to Create a Style Guide

There is only one way to stop this from happening and that is to set up a style guide. Not only will a style guide assist you oversee the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you strengthen your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Step 1 : Mark the audience for your Style Guide. Is this for staff to use in-house or is this for suppliers and contractors to refer to?

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most typical question that is asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many company brands and different models available, it can be difficult for consumers to decide between those technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors provide far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph explains why DLP projectors struggle with creating a similar rate of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your room on your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. That is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel works like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector turns on to when the image reaches your screen is vitally significant in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to deliver the projector image. A significant point to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your screen all at the same time. The way a DLP projector runs is widely different and even the final product of how an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to forming an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then draw each coloured element of the image into the total image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create top brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some designers have put a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this also lessens colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior quality. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is able to produce. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this must be a benefit, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is in use. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to see requires moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all colours are processed at once. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the cost of these projectors make them not practical for many businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and they taught you how the various colours of light refract different amounts when passing through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in different ways. Usually with a DLP projector, a superfluous yellow colour will show above and an extra blue will appear below an image as simple as a straight black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on a separate LCD panels.

The isolated actual buy point (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant to mobility and cannot be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht was a pleasure craft used initially by royalty and then by the burghers in the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, arising as private matches. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 bet. Yachting rose as popular for the wealthy and nobility, but after that time the trend did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and held much naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when merging with other societies, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some ordered method on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to sovereignty in 1820, it came to be named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing setting of British yacht racing. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. Every member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large stakes were held, and the social life was wonderful. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English held dominance. Sailing was mostly for fun and found its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts took the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the later half of the 19th century. The craft of large yachts was initially greatly impacted by the victory of America, which was designed by George Steers for a association started by John C. Hence, a rating rule came into being, which is found in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and amended in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly growing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to single specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be held on an even basis with no handicapping at all. A great example is the standard International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting was done mostly for the royal and the rich, expense was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The rise and popularity of smaller craft happened in the latter half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of less sizeable boats. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, during which steam began to emulate sail power in public boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in leisure vessels. Bigger power yachts were furthered to a high element, and long-distance sailing became a favourite activity of the rich. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave way to yachts powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of large steam yachts. Conspicuous within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service in World War II.

As bigger and better quality internal-combustion engines were produced, many big yachts started using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. In the decade that followed, big power-yacht creation flourished, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that time the biggest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of larger power boats fell away in 1932, and the trend thereafter was in preference of smaller, less expensive yachts. From World War II, lots of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting has become a globally beloved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally owning and keeping their own small recreational craft. The number of yachts and yachtsmen is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional areas by the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be categorized by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that puts the same relative liability on all taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income increase in relative proportion. A progressive tax is characterizable by a higher than proportional increase in the tax burden in regard to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional increase in the comparable liability. Therefore, progressive taxes are thought of as removing the lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are found to have the result of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are generally thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, might become less so for the upper-income demographic—especially if a taxpayer is allowed to lessen his tax base by declaring deductions or by taking particular income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income groups could also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are declared.

Income measured over the period of a given year may not definitely give the most appropriate measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory rises in income can be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to provide for consumption by reducing savings. Therefore, if taxation is regarded with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than if compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the share of personal income consumed or spent for specific goods declines as the rate of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also called head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is not easy to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden lays for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In considering the economic effect of taxation, it is essential to differentiate between several concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates will be dictated in the legislation; generally these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Thus, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income rises. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates need to consider provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than nominated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to know the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, as it may be reliant on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the percentage of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates commonly grow with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households can dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that decrease as income increases.
