There is only one way to avoid this from happening and that is to use a style guide. Not only will a style guide aid you conduct the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you reinforce your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The common question heard when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and types available, it can be confusing for clients to pick between both technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors provide better image quality and colour accuracy. The article below explains why DLP projectors struggle with projecting a comparable standard of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your household over your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. That is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as pros like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point when the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is vitally important in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to send the projector image. Something important to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your projected surface at the same time. The way a DLP projector runs is totally different and even the final product of how an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of forming an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then put together each coloured element of the image into the single full image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create top brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have added a white segment into the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this further damages colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and as such must be superior quality. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of producing. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications compared to the majority of LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be an advantage, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is in use. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to see needs moving images, DLP projection technology also has image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all the colours are processed simultaneously. DLP builders have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up issue, but the price tag of these projectors make them not practical for many businesses and consumers.

Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and remember how the various colours of light refract differing amounts when passing through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light in a different way. Most of the time with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will appear above and a spill of blue will be projected below an image as simple as a single black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be fixed to reduce these effects on the projected image, as each colour is projected on its own LCD panels.

The sole real benefit (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to mobility and must be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. If overall picture quality is crucial to you, then the answer is no-brainer. Choose an LCD projector! LCD projectors will definitely show bright, colourful images with fewer image imperfections. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a pleasure craft used first by royalty and secondly by the burghers on the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, coming out of private games. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 punt. Yachting rose as classy for the wealthy and aristocracy, but after that period the habit did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, with great naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other groups, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some organized fashion on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to sovereignty in 1820, it was known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht club had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued setting of British racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the accession of George IV. Every member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for high stakes were held, and the club life was lovely. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English had control. Sailing was largely for pleasure and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and set a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the second half of the 19th century. The design of large yachts was first heavily impacted by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a club started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its victory at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in a contemporary sense, with only a model being used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the application of the science of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what science had already done for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats were individually manufactured, there was a requirement for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and revised in 1919. Today, one of the most rapidly blossoming areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing these boats can be done on an even par with no handicapping necessary. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was an activity primarily for the royal and the wealthy, cost was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The rise and popularity of smaller craft happened in the second half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the hardiness of smaller boats. Following this in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and leisure yachts became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, during which steam was set to emulate sail power in public boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in leisure boats. Sizeable power yachts were progressed to a high element, and long-distance sailing became a preferred pastime of the rich. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave rise to boats powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht archetype for many years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were solely power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service during World War II.

As bigger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were developed, many big boats began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, advanced from World War I. During the decade that followed, large power-yacht creation grew, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that time the largest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of big power boats fell away from 1932, and the style from then was for smaller, less pricey yachts. Following World War II, a lot of small naval boats were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually sailing and maintaining their own small recreational craft. Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are differentiated by the impact they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that impinges the same relative requirement on every taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income move in relative proportion. A progressive tax is recognised by a higher than proportional rise in the tax onus in relation to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the comparative liability. Therefore, progressive taxes are seen as taking away inequity in income distribution, but regressive taxes might cause an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are often believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, might become less so within the upper-income class—in particular if a taxpayer is allowed to lower his tax base by claiming deductions or by taking some particular income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income groups will also be more progressive if personal exemptions are claimed.

Income measured over a given period might not necessarily come up with the best measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory rises in income may be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer could elect to pay for consumption by taking from savings. Thus, if taxation is compared alongside “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of luxuries) are generally regressive, because the portion of own income consumed or spent for a specific good lowers as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), calculated as a set amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is complicated to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of uncertainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden rests fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In regarding the economic effects of taxation, it is necessary to distinguish between several ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those dictated in law; often these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, as it may depend on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates indicate the part of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally rise with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households could swamp these effects, forcing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that fall as income increases.
